BSG's Stormwater Design Adopted

BSG's Stormwater Design Adopted By Philadelphia's Green Streets Initiative Team
Sea Girt, NJ - December 1, 2010

Green City, Clean Waters is the vision developed by Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) to convey the goals of several long-term planning initiatives aimed at improving the environment of the Philadelphia area while addressing combined sewer overflow reductions. Central to all these planning programs is a commitment to greening, sustainability, open space, waterfront revitalization, outdoor recreation, and quality of life.

Streets represent 38% or 4,000 acres of the impervious cover throughout Philadelphia. The goal of the City's Green Streets Initiative, which is part of Green City, Clean Waters, is to improve the quality of life by improving water quality, making neighborhoods cooler in the summer, and increasing home values.

Birdsall Services Group (BSG) is one of the professional firms working on the PWD's Green Streets Initiative team to provide Philadelphia neighborhoods with a better way to manage stormwater runoff before it enters the storm drains.

BSG is providing innovative engineering design services to the PWD's Design and Watershed groups on a collaborative effort to develop "green street"' details for managing stormwater on the city streets. BSG has developed a "green street" prototype design for stormwater treatment alternatives, which enlists sound streetscape design principles that can be easily adapted to most urban settings that are practical, constructible, maintainable and effective in addressing the collection of stormwater into the City's existing utilities.
