Birdsall Engineering, Inc. (BEI) provided environmental and engineering services associated with the contamination assessment and cleanup of the former manufactured gas plant at the Greystone Psychiatric Center near Parsippany, NJ. Due to the hazardous nature of the site and the potential for human exposure, immediate action was required to contain the contaminants and ensure a safe and secure site. The scope of work included supervision of the security fence installation; structural inspections; sensitive evaluations of the water supply; a well search; development of a Health and Safety Plan and a baseline air monitoring program; sampling of potable wells; soil and water sampling; and boundary, topography and wetland surveys.
Because the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, BEI, in collaboration with the New Jersey State Preservation Office, prepared a Remedial Action Workplan (RAW) detailing the scope of work for all remedial investigation activities. BEI implemented these actions, which included soil and groundwater sampling, test pits, well installation and monitoring and building demolition.
